History
"Room at the Top" is about the end of Petty's first marriage, and it's a very introspective song. Petty himself described it as one of the most depressing songs in rock history,[2] and said it was about escapism, and intensely personal for him, so much so that once the Echo tour was over, he refused to play it.[3]
