Sam Yates

Sam Yates (born 30 August 1983 in Stockport)[1] is an award-winning[2] British director.[3]

Yates was born in Stockport and attended Poynton High School.[3] He was selected as one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow in 2016,[4] named a rising star in The Observer in 2014,[3] and featured in GQ Magazine's "Men of the next 25 years" in 2013.[5] Yates has been described as "a major talent"[6] in The Guardian newspaper and "a director of unusual flair"[7] in The Observer. He studied English at Homerton College, Cambridge.[3][8]

His productions have been nominated for Olivier Awards (Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Murder Ballad (2017),[9] and Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for The Phlebotomist by Ella Road (2019).[10]

Yates has directed two music videos for Ivor Novello Award-nominated band Bear's Den, Auld Wives[11] and Emeralds.[12]

Yates is known for his "eclectic body of work" and his "superb sense for casting",[13] having directed leading talent Andrew Scott,[14] Ruth Wilson,[7] Hayley Atwell,[15] Gemma Arterton,[16] Christian Slater,[17] Matthew Broderick,[18] Ciaran Hinds,[14] Jane Horrocks,[6] Elizabeth McGovern[18] and Jonah Hauer-King.[19]
