Samuel Adegboyega University Library

Samuel Adegboyega University Library, also known as Samson Adedoyin Library, is an academic library located in the central part of Edo State, South-South, Nigeria. The Library is the centre of academic activities in Samuel Adegboyega University and in Ogwa Community in Edo State, Nigeria.[1]

The Library provides users with information and information resources that enhance their teaching, learning and research. It holds large volumes of collections in print and non print format. In addition to serving the university community, the Library also serve the Esan communities, as it has different collections on Esan culture and history.[2] The Library is located at a close proximity to the school cafeteria, Sport Centre, The John Aluko Babatope Multipurpose Hall and the students' hostel, all within the University premises. The parent institution of the Library is the Samuel Adegboyega University, a faith based institution established by The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Lagos, Western and Northern Areas (LAWNA) Territory.[3][4] The six hundred seating capacity Library[5] houses different sections and units such as the E-library, Readers' Services section, Technical services section, Collection development section, Serials, Law section and the reprographic and bindery section.[1] The Library, being a knowledge resource centre, essentially provides adequate learning, information, teaching and research materials in a technologically advanced platform for students, academic and non-teaching personnel of the University; as well as for members of the surrounding Esan communities.[5] Furthermore, the Library provides a unified knowledge environment where traditional library services and electronic library services are accessible to library users. The usable floor area of the library building is 1,057 square meters.[5]

History

The Library was birthed on the 7th of March, 2011, when its parent institution, Samuel Adegboyega University, was awarded the license to operate by the National Universities Commission (NUC), as the 45th Private and 117th overall in the Nigerian university system.[3] Consequently, the Library was established and refurbished initially to cater for the information needs of students and staff of the university community.[6] The services offered by the Library was further expanded to cater for the Esan community with the establishment of the Centre for Research and Development of Esanland (CERDEL) in the University.[7][8]

The Library commenced it activities from a temporary location in the Senate Building of the university with a usable floor area of 295.07 square meters and with a sitting capacity for 150 users.[5] On the 15th of November 2019, the Permanent building of the library was commissioned by Pastor (DR.) Samson E. Igwe (JP), the national president of The Apostolic Church, Nigeria.[9]

Collections

The Library has different collections in the form of monographs, journals, reference books, Projects and inaugural lectures as well as a collection of newspapers.[5] The Library also has different electronic resources and databases. The library acquires volumes of books covering all programmes being offered in the University periodically.[10] Beyond that, the library maintains a collection of Christian literature to aid the spiritual development and enrichment of the users. Currently, the library has access to over 30 different electronic databases.

Administration and Staffing

The head of the library goes with the nomenclature of 'University Librarian' (UL). The UL is responsible for the day to day administration of the library and is assisted by other librarians who are in charge of the different sections and units in the Library. Basically, the staffing of the Library cut across three categories of staff, namely: professional, para-professional and non professional staffs. While the professional staff include those with at least a Masters degree in Librarianship, the para-professional staff include those with Diploma in Librarianship. On the other hand, the non-professionals in the Library include those without any formal library training and qualification in librarianship.

Automation

The Library operates an automated system using the KOHA Library Management software.[5] Most of the Library routine activities such as registration of Library users, charging and discharging of library materials are done using the library management system. Bibliographic details of the Library collections are held in digitized formats accessible through computer terminals in the college libraries and in the main Library.[5]

Major Services Rendered

The Library renders numerous services to its users and community. The services rendered in the library include but not limited to reference services, reprographic and binding services, research support services, twelve hours reading room services, printing services, charging and discharging of library materials, user education/ information literacy training, reeference Services, collection development services, technical services, serials and special collection services, internet services, E-library services, information retrieval and literature search services, selective dissemination of information/ current awareness services amongst others.
