Scott Sterling (fictional)

Scott Sterling is a fictional sports personality, known for his key roles in multiple internet viral videos. Sterling is played by Matt Meese, who was the co-founder, lead writer, and actor for the BYUtv family comedy television program Studio C until Studio C’s Ninth season.[1]

Sterling first appeared on Studio C in November 2014 as a soccer goalkeeper for Yale[2] who inadvertently blocks five penalty kicks with his face during a game-deciding shootout.[3] His efforts help lead Yale to victory against North Carolina to claim the NCAA Division I national title in the Final of the College Cup, and additionally, he is dubbed "The Man, The Myth, The Legend" by commentators before being carried off on a "Stretcher of Glory" by his Bulldog teammates. The original soccer video went viral, attracting 10 million views on YouTube in 10 days and 20 million views in the first few months after release.[4][5]

In a video released in March 2016, Sterling joins Yale once again as captain of the volleyball team (although Yale only maintains a non-NCAA club men's volleyball team in reality). In this video, he (once again) inadvertently blocks volleyballs with his face, again leading Yale to victory in the NCAA Division I National Championships– and again against North Carolina. This clip reached over 1 million views in less than 24 hours.[6][7][8]

The soccer sketch and the volleyball sketch are, by far, the two most viewed videos on Studio C's YouTube channel, with over 75 million and 60 million views, respectively, as of September 2020.[9]
