Semaphore Gallery

Semaphore Gallery was a contemporary art gallery founded by Barry Blinderman in 1980 in New York City, located on West Broadway in the Soho district. In 1984, Semaphore East was also established on the corner of 10th and Avenue B in the East Village district of New York City.[1] Semaphore Gallery closed both spaces in 1987.[2]

History

Semaphore Gallery helped launch the careers of Walter Robinson, Martin Wong, Rebecca Howland, Lady Pink, Bobby G, Futura 2000, Joseph Nechvatal, Jane Dickson, Cara Perlman, Tseng Kwong Chi, Duncan Hannah, and Nancy Dwyer.[3]

Semaphore East, directed by Annie Herron, hosted exhibitions that included works by David Wojnarowicz, Lori Taschler, Keith Haring, Donald Baechler, Raymond Pettibon, Ellen Berkenblit, Mike Bidlo, Keiko Bonk, William Burroughs, Sue Coe, Robert Colescott, John Fekner, Gran Fury, Mimi Gross, Jenny Holzer, Mark Innerst, Alexander Kosolapov, Mark Kostabi, Stephen Lack, Robert Longo, Marilyn Minter, Komar & Melamid, Michael Zwack, Andy Warhol, and Hannah Wilke.[4]
