Career

Having a background as a theatre artiste in Chennai, Shabeer made his feature film debut by playing the lead role in Lakshmy Ramakrishnan's Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe (2014).[1] Featuring alongside actresses Piaa Bajpai and Sruthi Hariharan, Shabeer portrayed a lorry driver caught up in a petrol crisis.[2] On the back of his performance in his first film, director Ragavendra cast him in a main role in his directorial debut, 54321 (2016). Shabeer portrayed the lead antagonist in the film, with Ragavendra citing he chose the actor because of his experience in theatre performances and his ability to act.[3][4] The film won mixed reviews at the box office, and the low-scale nature of its release, meant that it went unnoticed at the box office.[5]

In 2017, Shabeer was signed by Prabhu Deva to play a pivotal role in the action film Karuppu Raja Vellai Raja featuring Karthi, Vishal and Sayyeshaa.[6] However, soon after the production began, the film was dropped as a result of scheduling issues. In 2018, Shabeer portrayed a small role in Adanga Maru (2018). He was later signed up by Karthik Subbaraj to play a role in the Rajinikanth-starrer, Petta (2019). After passing several rounds of auditions for the film, Shabeer shot for his scenes in Chennai and Lucknow, sharing screen space with actors such as Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.[7][8]
