Shabnam Nasimi

Nasimi’s family came to the UK from Afghanistan, after fleeing the Taliban regime in 1999. Her father Nooralhaq Nasimi gained his PhD in Law in the former Soviet Union and her mother Mahboba completed her Masters in Jurisprudence; they prized education above all else.[1]

Nasimi educated in University of Law. She is one of four children, all of whom have gone to study in some of the most prestigious universities in the UK, including Cambridge University and King's College London.[2]

She went to St Saviour's and St Olave's Church of England School until 18, completing her GCSE and A-levels. She was educated at Open University where she gained a degree in Law. She then completed an MSc in Global Governance and International Security at Birkbeck University.[3][4][5]

Nasimi founded Conservative Friends of Afghanistan,[6] an influential group that exists to promote understanding and support for Afghanistan in 2019. The organisation works to make sure Afghanistan’s case is fairly heard in Parliament of the United Kingdom. The group is support by high-profile British Parliamentarian such as Tom Tugendhat MP, Nusrat Ghani MP, Sir Michael Fallon, Baroness Warsi and many others. She is also a women’s rights activist in the UK as the Ambassador of the 50:50 Parliament Campaign and in Afghanistan, working to promote the human rights of women in the country.[7]

She has written for The Times,[8][9] Prospect Magazine, Quillette, Free Market Conservatives and Conservative Home.[10][11] Nasimi has appeared as a political commentator on Newsnight, BBC News, ITV News, Channel 4[12] and Channel 5 News and other International media[13] to provide commentary and analysis on British Politics, foreign policy, immigration and Social integration, ethnic minority communities in the UK and gender equality.[14]

In 2019, Nasimi received an award for being an Influential Women in Public Affairs by Policy Mogul. She was also nominated and shortlisted as one of the BBC’s 100 Women during 2019.[15][16]

In 2019, Nasimi was a vocal advocate for Brexit, a stance which, in cultural circles and amongst ethnic minority communities was quite alien. She emphasises the democratic referendum result. Nasimi is known for being the first person of British Afghan heritage to be a Conservative in the UK.

Nasimi endorsed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Leadership Election, working to secure the BAME vote. At the 2019 general election, Nasimi worked with Conservative Campaign Headquarters to lead on outreach and engagement of British Afghans in the UK and endorsed the Conservatives.[17][18]
