Mendis was born at Colombo, where he was educated at S. Thomas' College before going to England to study at Oxford Brookes University.[1][2] While studying at Oxford Brookes, he made a single appearance in first-class cricket for Oxford UCCE against Middlesex at Oxford in 2007.[3][notes 1] Batting once in the match, he was dismissed without scoring in the Oxford UCCE first innings by Tim Murtagh. With his off break bowling, he bowled 17 overs in the Middlesex first innings conceding 100 runs, while in their second innings he bowled 3.5 overs, conceding 11 runs and taking the wicket of David Nash.[4] Mendis was due to play minor counties cricket for Oxfordshire in 2015, but was prevented from doing so by registration problems.[5] His brother, Manoj, played first-class cricket, while his uncle Duleep Mendis played international cricket for the Sri Lanka national cricket team.
