Sibpur Hindu Girls High School

The school was founded by Jadunath Banerjee in the year of 1867. In the early days, initially the students studied free of cost, Some local philanthropists donated 4 annas to run this school . After a few years a minimum fees of 1 anna and 4 annas were charged for primary and secondary students. The Howrah Corporation had also extended its helping hand by donating Rs 7/- every month till the year 1898. Till 1925 the largest amount donated was Rs 40/-. Even though progress was visibly poor yet it preserved the freedom and motive behind starting such a school. In 1867 the school was started in a rented house in Sibpur area . In 1876 it was shifted to Kshetra Mohan Banerjee Lane to a 4 roomed rented house . But an earthquake unfortunately destroyed the house in 1869. The general public extended their helping hand and the school was restarted. In 1910 the school inspector was dissatisfied with where the school was housed and shifted it to Ananda Kr Roy Chowdhury Lane and the rent was Rs 1/- per month. The number of students rose from 168 to 200 in 1913 . In 1912, the inspector of schools of Presidency, Burdwan and Orissa division Miss Crawford inspected our school and being satisfied a government assistance of Rs 60/- was arranged to run the school . But for reasons otherwise the grant could not be made. So in 1913 a grant of Rs 20 /-per month was arranged which later went up to Rs 50/-per month .As the roll strength rose the school faced a space crunch. In 1914 at Sibpur Road a 3 Kotah land was acquired for construction of the school . The school managing committee asked for a one time aid of Rs 3000/- from the state government . But due to the 1st world war aid from the government was not provided. For 11 years the school functioned from its rented quarters. In 1930 another 4 Kotahs of land was added to its previous purchase of 3 Kotahs. In 1932 the construction of the school started . In 1935 the present school came into shape. In 1952 the Madhya Siksha Parishad granted an aid of Rs 46,247 to construct the building . Another aid of Rs 23,851 /- followed. Again in 1954 an additional 3 Kotahs of land was again purchased for Rs 11,580/- was spent on construction was aided with a help of Rs 5788/- from the Madhya Siksha parshad . At this time 22.5 Kotahs of land was purchased and an additional Rs 30,000/- was given by Madhya Siksha parshad In 1959, the west Bengal government provided Rs 50,000/- as financial help. From 1959 after Independence the state government has taken charge of running this school by extending financial assistance it. At the beginning the school had 6 classes . In 1990 it was reduced to 4 classes, In 1902 the classes were increased and got seven classes. Lower primary and upper primary classes resumed. By 1952 the school introduced education in the English language. By 1959 the school reached the Madhyamik and later Higher Secondary level. In 1964 the school received permission to open its science department. In 1968 commerce department was opened at the Hindu Girls’ High School. At the time the school was set up, the member of teachers were only two. By this time the Primary section and Secondary section was functioning separately. In 1910 and 1914 two new teachers were inducted . In 1946 respected Lila De joined as the principal of this institution. She gave a vast contribution to the school. Initially the school started off with a few students. Fewer teachers resulted in fewer number of students in the school. Gradually things picked up . In 1901 there were around 60. In 1912 it was 168 and in 1913 it reached 200. An all high was in 1952 The number reached 500. Now the roll strength is about 2500. The success rate in H.S exams in 1964 was 75% and in 1965 it was 80%.[1]

• The great social reformer and pupil of Swami Vivekananda Sister Nivedita had herself visited Sibpur Hindu Girls’ High School in 1902 .She presided over an annual program hosted by the school and she gave away prize to the meritorious students encouraging them to do better .Both she and Sibpur Hindu Girls High School share the same year of birth (1867).

The school's main building has three floors. There is no big playground in this school.[2]
