It is located 25 km (16 mi) to the south of Erode, 35 km (22 mi) to the north-west of Karur, 40 km (25 mi) to the west of Namakkal and 45 km (28 mi) to the east of Tiruppur. Sivagiri means "Shiva's peak", also called as Kanagagiri, which might have been derived from the hill with a Shiva temple located in the town. The economy of the town is dependent on the agriculture and textile industries (mostly handlooms). Sivagiri is well connected with Erode and Karur, the neighboring towns by local transports.

The Bharathiyar University College of Arts and Science is located here, run by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It has the SSV Matriculation Higher Secondary School and government schools for both boys (Sivagiri) and girls (Ammankovil).

Temples in the town include the Shri Kamakshi Amman temple, the Shri Kuzhandhai Velayudha Swami temple and the Pulippani Siddhar temple. Another temple of Lord Shiva is located about 3 km from Sivagiri towards Arachalur in a place called Vilakkethy. The name of the god is Sri Vimalambika Samedha Vithgavinadheeswara. It is believed that a saint called Vilakkethi Siddhar performed poojas in this temple by lighting deepams and hence the name Vilakkethi came for this Village.[1]

Generally in the month of April, one of the largest Ratha Yatra festival is celebrated in Shri Velayudha Swami temple every year.
