Solicitors Journal

Solicitors Journal is a monthly legal journal published in the United Kingdom by the International In-house Counsel Journal, Cambridge.[1] It was established in 1856[2] and covers "practical and independent updates and analysis about the latest developments affecting the legal profession."[3] The magazine has its headquarters in Cambridge.[2]

History

The Solicitors Journal replaced the Legal Observer and Solicitors Journal, also known as the Legal Observer (1830–1856).[4][5][6][7] The Weekly Reporter (1853–1906) merged into the Solicitors Journal.[8][9] The Weekly Reporter's common law editor from 1862 to 1866 was Standish Grove Grady.[10]

The journal was published weekly until September 2017, when it was closed by its then owner, Wilmington plc.[11] It was previously published by Longman Group UK Ltd.[12] Publication resumed in January 2019 as a monthly magazine, by International In-house Counsel Journal Limited, based in Cambridge and King's Lynn.[13]

Editors included William Shaen,[14][15] Alexander Edward Miller,[16] William Mitchell Fawcett (from 1872 to 1912),[17] John Mason Lightwood (1912 to 1925),[18] David Hughes Parry[19] (1925 to 1928),[20] John Robert Perceval-Maxwell (1928 to 1929),[21] Thomas Cunliffe (1929 to 1948),[22] John Passmore Widgery (1948 to 1955),[23] Philip Asterley Jones (1956 to 1968),[24] Neville David Vandyk (1968 to 1988),[25][26] Julian Harris[27] and Marie Staunton[28] (1990[29] to 1997).[30]

Citing

The Solicitors Journal publishes law reports. For the purposes of citation, its name may be abbreviated to "SJ"[31] or "Sol Jo",[32] while "Solicitors' Journal and Reporter" may be abbreviated to "Sol J & R".[33]
