Notable alumni
Phoebe Apperson Hearst was born near St. Clair, Missouri in 1842. She worked as a teacher in area schools until she met and married George Hearst. Phoebe Hearst gave birth to her only son, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, in 1863. Mrs.Hearst was a great philanthropist and she financed a school for the training of Kindergarten teachers. She also went on to found an organization that was the forerunner of today's PTA. Hearst died of influenza in 1919.[1]
Suicides
Three students, a freshman, a sophomore and a junior committed suicide during a period of seven weeks[2] in 2012.[3] Bullying was believed by some parents to be the motivation.[4]
