St Joseph's School, Bhagalpur is an English medium school up to class 12th located in Bihar state of India. It is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. It was established in 1983 by Rt Rev Urban Mc Garry, the first Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur.

The principal is Father Amal Raj. Father Varghese Panangatt was the founding and the longest serving principal for 31 years. The school is managed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur.

The school has three basketball courts, premises for badminton, table tennis it has a football pitch and a permanent stadium.[2]

The school has five blocks as kindergarten, primary section, middle school, senior section and a plus two section. The school has a remarkable excellence in both tenth and twelfth level. It is also a well-known name in sports as it regularly produces national level talents in various fields. Students get ample opportunities in fields of dance and music with a well-built auditorium. It has seating capacity of around 5000 people with a permanent live stage and a well equipped light and sound system. The motto of the school is Excellence Virtue Discipline.

History

The American Rt Rev Urban Eugene McGarry (1910-2000), first Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bhagalpur, started an English medium co-educational school in Bhagalpur on 15 November 1982 and invited Sisters of St Ann of Providence from Secunderabad as a core team to assist him.

On 2 February 1983, McGarry blessed and inaugurated the new school with LKG and UKG classes. Father Varghese Panangatt was appointed as the principal of the school and Fr Joseph Thanniparampil as its Secretary. Sisters Alice, Loretta and Joyce joined as first teaching staff with other teachers.

The school received a No Objection certificate from 30 September 1992. The school received permanent affiliation on 17 January 1997.

The Senior Secondary (Plus Two) section of the school was inaugurated on 5 July 2005 under the ISC curriculum with Commerce and Science streams. The first batch of Plus two students appeared in the 2007 board examination.

Campus

The campus is located on the outskirts of Bhagalpur, opposite to TNB College, Bhagalpur. The campus is divided into clusters of buildings. The academic area comprises the Kindergarten section, Primary section, Senior section and Higher Secondary(+2) section.

The campus has football and cricket grounds; and basketball and volleyball courts. There is an open-air theatre and a stadium with a permanent stage. The school has an auditorium with a lighting and sound system, with accommodation for 1000 people.

Houses

The students are divided into four houses:

  • Astros (Red)
  • Biogens (Yellow)
  • Marines (Blue)
  • Terrestrians (Green)

Competition between the houses is quizzing, sports, debating, athletics, drama, and elocution. Meritorious houses are awarded house points and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the House cup.
