Supernova had its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on 22 September 2020 and is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2021, by StudioCanal and in the United States on 29 January 2021, by Bleecker Street.

Premise

Sam and Tusker, partners for 20 years, travel across England to the Lake District, reuniting with friends and family. As Tusker is diagnosed with early onset dementia, the pair spend as much time together as they can before Tusker dies.

In October 2019, it was announced Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci had joined the cast of the film, with Harry Macqueen directing from a screenplay he wrote, with StudioCanal distributing in the United Kingdom.[4][5]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on 22 September 2020.[6] It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2020.[7] In October 2020, Bleecker Street acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film.[8] It was released in the United States on 29 January 2021.

Reception

Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports that 88% of 100 critic reviews are positive for the film, and the average rating is 7.6/10. Critics consensus on the website reads, "Led by moving performances from Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, Supernova is a heartbreaking look at the emotional toll that comes with accepting mortality."[9] Metacritic calculated a weighted average score of 74 out of 100, based on 22 reviews, citing "generally favorable reviews".[10]
