History

Its name "Surawong" after Chao Phraya Surawong Wattanasak or To Bunnag (while he was Phraya Siharat Dechochai), an aristocrat who bought land and built two roads, one is road runs from Charoen Krung road to the end of Khlong Wua Lamphong (currently, the area near Hua Lamphong railway station and Rama IV road). And one starts from the road before that toward east and spans canal as far as terminates at Si Lom road. When both roads were built successfully, his wife Than Puying Talab asked for names from the Queen Saovabha Phongsri, she was the regent of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) who traveled to many European countries in 1897. The queen gave two names "Surawong" for first route and "Decho" for second route, both of them are named in honour of her husband.

However, for Surawong in the reign of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), it was renamed "Suriyawong" (สุริยวงศ์) according to Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu's considers, the old name was unlikely to be spelled correctly on August 11, 1930 (this name has become a sub-district in Bangrak). Before that, it was called "Suriwong" (สุริวงศ์) for a period of 30 years.

Presently, it's officially named "Surawong".

In the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Surawong, including nearby roads such as Charoen Krung or Si Lom are surrounded by many foreign luxury restaurants until well known.[1]

The road

Surawong be considered as the short road in the middle and runs parallel to its counterparts Si Lom (lower) and Si Phraya (upper) roads. It is also a border between two administrative sub-districts of the Bang Rak, Suriyawong (left side) and Si Phraya (right side).

The road separates itself from Rama IV road's outbound at Henri Dunant intersection, where it intersects with Rama IV and Henri Dunant roads, then run straight as far as span Khlong Hua Lamphong Kao and Khlong Chong Nonsi, where it intersects with Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra road, then run straight and intersects with Naret road (from this point it became one-way road to the end) and pass under Sirat Expressway before bend slightly to the left as far as it combines Charoen Krung road at Surawong junction.

Surawong road is considered to be another Bangkok business district like nearby Si Lom and Sathon roads. Moreover, the famous and well-known nightlife are Patpong, Thaniya include Soi Pratuchai. They're also alleyways of the road.[2] Although, it's just a short road, but Surawong has excellent traffic management compared to other nearby roads such as Si Lom or Rama IV with no obstacles at all. And although there're only few bus stops throughout the two roadsides, but it can be accessed by many bus lines as well as nearby BTS Skytrain and MRT.[3]
