Company history

Founding

Talkdesk was founded in Lisbon Portugal in 2011 when Cristina Fonseca and Tiago Paiva built the first version of the solution during a contest hosted by Twilio. This solution utilised Twilio's API.[3][4] The founders won the contest, were invited to join 500 Startup's third batch[5] and raised $450,000.[6]

Growth

By 2019 the company had grown to almost 1000 employees, and was headquartered in San Francisco. It has funded its growth substantially by multiple investment rounds, and since it is privately held does not release revenue figures. It claimed 1,800 customers by 2020, including IBM, Acxiom, 2U, Trivago and YMCA.

Investment

In August 2014, Talkdesk raised US$3.15 million in an investment round led by Storm Ventures.[7]

  • Series B - In 2018 Talkdesk raised $100 million in series B funding, valuing the company at over US$1 billion.[10]
  • Series C - In July 2020, Talkdesk raised US$143 million in series C funding, valuing the company at US$3 billion.[11]

Products and markets

Talkdesk has targeted the financial services, insurance, retail & e-commerce, healthcare, lifescience, travel & hospitality industries with its call centre as a service (CCaaS) solution. It has integrations to Salesforce, Zendesk, Slack, Microsoft Teams, ServiceNow and Microsoft Dynamics CRM. In November 2020 it announced it would be using BICS to provide cloud numbers and SIP Trunking to support its customers.[12]
