The Dardanelles (band)
The Dardanelles are a Canadian folk music group from Newfoundland and Labrador.[1] Led by vocalists and guitarists Tom Power and Matthew Byrne, the band also includes Emilia Bartellas on fiddle, Aaron Collis on accordion and Rich Klaas on bodhran and percussion.[2][3]
History
The Dardanelles formed in 2005,[4] and released their self-titled debut album in 2009,[1] and received a nomination for Best Instrumental Album at the 2010 East Coast Music Awards.[5] Their second album, The Eastern Light, followed in 2011, and received two nominations for Group Recording of the Year and Roots/Traditional Group Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Awards.[6]
The Dardanelles performed at the 2012 Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival in St. John's.[7] The band's recording of "Polly Moore", from The Eastern Light, was included on the soundtrack to the 2013 film The Grand Seduction.[8]
Byrne has also released several albums as a solo artist, and Collis and Bartellas released a self-titled album as a duo in 2013.
The band have not released a new album since The Eastern Light, but have continued to perform selected touring dates on the folk festival circuit.[9] In 2014 they travelled as far as Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for a performance.[10]
