Overview

As opposed to the classic bilingual dictionary which lists the words alongside its translations, the Easy-Shmeezy Guide to Yiddish follows Sherizen's Jump, Expand, and Talk (J.E.T.) method of learning new languages. In the first step, Jump, the reader learns common words and expressions, putting him the mindset that he is a speaker of the new language. In step two, Expand, he expands his vocabulary, and in step three, Talk, he practices speaking the new language as much as possible; in the Talk section, Sherizen writes out conversations spoken in Yiddish. Not officially included in the J.E.T. System is a fourth step, where one learns the grammar of the new language.

Included in the book is a section on "Yeshivish", where a list of Yiddish words that non-Hassidic Haredim commonly mix into their English is printed. At the end of the book, Sherizen includes a list of old Yiddish expressions, famous Yiddish songs, and Yiddish stories. The book has jokes printed throughout it. Six editions of the book were printed, the first in 2012 and the latest in 2016, which included classic English-Yiddish and Yiddish-English dictionaries. A compact disc was produced as well.

In 2014, Sherizen wrote The Easy-Shmeezy Guide to Hebrew,[1] and in 2017, the The Easy-Shmeezy Guide to Spanish.[2] All of his books are paperback and pocket-size, measuring at 4.25x5.75.[3]

Naomi Elbinger, the founder of Yiddish-Translation.com, said that the book "is exactly what today’s Yiddish enthusiasts have been waiting for," and that "it puts the fun back into learning Yiddish!”[4][5][6]

Singer and Yiddish songwriter, Lipa Schmeltzer, created a rhyme about the book, saying "Yiddish you’ll be schmoozing, with this book that’s so amusing, hayb oyf dayne hantelech (raise up your hands) to The Easy-Shmeezy Guide to Yiddish!"[5][7][8]
