History

The Protein Works was founded in 2012 by Mark Coxhead,[4] and funded by Yorkshire Bank.[5]

During the 2013/2014 season The Protein Works became the official sports nutrition supplier to Everton Football Club.[6] The partnership was the first in the history of the Premier League where a range of sports nutrition products had been supplied.[7][8][9] Everton renewed its partnership with the company in 2018.[10] In 2015, the company opened what it describes as the UK’s first ‘protein bakery’. The 40,000sq ft facility researches, develops and manufactures protein rich snack foods such as popcorn, flapjack bars, diet truffles and pancakes.[11] The company manufactures its products at its facilities in Runcorn, Cheshire and sells direct to market through its website and distribution networks. Its product line includes plant-based protein and baked goods. Following a 2019 management buyout by YFM Equity Partners the company achieved sales of £13million.[12]
