The Sloth Institute Costa Rica

The Sloth Institute Costa Rica is a small, not-for-profit organisation based in Manuel Antonio, close to Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sloths. It often takes in orphaned or injured sloths, which require care. Through the work of the team, the sloths are rehabilitated and released back into the wild.[1][2][3]

Mission

The Sloth Institute's mission is to expand scientific knowledge and education about sloths to enhance their well-being and assure their conservation. Through research, collaborations and education,[4] The Sloth Institute hopes to help preserve sloths in the wild.[5][6][7]

The Sloth Institute is not a sloth sanctuary and is not open to the public.[8] It specialises in research and education with a particular focus on the behaviour, health and welfare or recently released, wild and captive sloths. Sloths are not available to be seen by the public as it is in their best interest to have as little contact with humans as possible.

History

The Sloth Institute Costa Rica was founded in 2014 by co-founders Seda Sejud and Sam Trull,[9][10] who is also known as "the Mother of Sloths.[11]"[12] It is also believed that the Sloth Institute delivered the world's first birth of a sloth by Caesarean section.[13]
