Thorir Rögnvaldarson

Thorir Rögnvaldarson (also Tore Teiande, nicknamed the Silent, 872 - 940) was a ninth-century Viking warlord son of Rognvald Eysteinsson, Jarl of Møre, Norway and brother of Rollo, the first Viking warlord to initiate a lineage that would govern the Duchy of Normandy, and Ivar Rögnvaldsson. His half-brother Torf-Einarr was the Jarl of Orkney.[1][2][3] In 892, Thorir assumed his role as jarl of Møre after the death of his father.[4]

Two sons of King Harald Fairhair, Halfdan Long-Leg and Gudrod the Bright, killed Thorir's father by attacking him in his own house and setting him on fire. Gudrød took possession of the lands of Rögnvald while Hálfdan sailed west towards Orkney to overthrow Torf-Einarr. King Harald, apparently horrified by the actions of his sons, dispossessed Gudrød and restored Rögnvald's possessions to Thorir, assuming his role as Møre's jarl after the death of his father.[5][6]

Issue

Thorir married Ålov, daughter of Harald I of Norway and they had three daughters.

  • Bergljot (b. 914) who married the jarl of Lade Sigurd Håkonsson
  • Vigdis (b. 918) who married Ingimundur Þorsteinsson
  • Jorund háls (b. 916).[7]

He is also charged with the paternity of:

  • Thorbard av Møre, who married Griselle, daughter of Rollo, and were parents of Walter Fitz Herbert de la Mare.
  • Ljot Þoresson av Møre, who would be the father of Bård Nesjekonge.
