Tom Bateman (actor)

Thomas Jonathan Bateman (born 15 March 1989)[1] is an English actor. He is best known for his roles on the television series Da Vinci's Demons (2013–2015), and in the film Murder on the Orient Express (2017).[2]

Early life

Bateman was born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, to a working-class family.[3] He has twelve siblings, including a twin brother, named Merlin.[4]

Bateman studied drama at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA),[5] where he appeared in a production of Much Ado About Nothing with Catherine Tate and David Tennant. He later joined Kenneth Branagh's company at the Garrick Theatre, where he acted alongside Judi Dench in The Winter's Tale.[4]

Career

Bateman starred in Sky TV's 2013 television series The Tunnel. He appeared as Giuliano de' Medici in the 2013 - 2015 TV series Da Vinci's Demons.

He portrayed William Shakespeare in the original London production of Shakespeare in Love in 2014.

In 2015 he starred as the title character in the 10-episode British television series Jekyll and Hyde.

In 2017, he made his Hollywood debut, appearing in the comedy film Snatched and as Bouc in the mystery film Murder on the Orient Express.

In 2018 he starred in the ITV dramatisation of Vanity Fair.[4]

He also starred as the main villain in the 2019 film Cold Pursuit.[6]

In August 2018, he was announced as the lead character in ITV's Beecham House, which aired in 2019.[7]

In August 2019, it was announced Bateman had been cast in the role of David on the Netflix psychological thriller miniseries, Behind Her Eyes.[8]

Personal life

Since 2017, Bateman has been in a relationship with actress Daisy Ridley, whom he met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express.[9]
