After WWII he started working with make-up company Michels in Amsterdam. He was involved with the first sinterklaasintocht (Sinterklaas welcoming) in 1946. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s he did the make-up for the artists of popular children's series such as Pipo de Clown, Ti-Ta-Tovenaar and Dagboek van een Herdershond. It was Van den Heuvel who designed the face of Pipo the Clown, including the sun on his cheek.[2]

Van den Heuvel was involved in many musicals as a make-up artist and often worked with Jos Brink. Van den Heuvel also did the make-up for (cosmetic) commercials in the Netherlands and abroad.[3][1]
