History

Trace3 was founded in 2002 by Hayes Drumwright (of POPin), as an IT systems value added reseller (VAR), and Drumwright served as its first CEO.[2]

By 2013, the company's services included big data consulting, cloud computing and data center consulting.[2]

In March 2014, the company launched a Venture Capital (VC) CIO Briefing program for clients, venture capitalists and technology entrepreneurs, to raise awareness of IT developments affecting businesses.[3]

In August 2014, the company hired a new CEO, Tyler Beecher, and Drumwright became Executive Chairman.[2]

In 2016, the company reported 2015 sales of $500M and 350 employees.[1] That same year, the company reported growth in its Internet of Things (IoT) services.[4] In December, the company launched a cybersecurity division.[5]

In June 2017, the company reported a strategic investment from Miami, Florida-based investment firm H.I.G. Capital. Financial terms were not disclosed.[6] In August, the company announced it was merging with Grand Rapids, Michigan-based IT company Data Strategy, another investment property of Trace3 investor H.I.G. Capital. The combined company reportedly had revenue of USD$1 billion.[7]

In August 2018, Trace3 acquired Data Strategy, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based solution provider that gave Trace3 a large market in the Midwest to go with its organically grown west coast presence.

In November 2020, Trace3 continued to strategically expand its geographic footprint in Northern California and Arizona with the acquisition of fellow solution provider Groupware Technology.

The company also resells equipment from large computer and information technology vendors, including Cisco, Dell, EMC Corporation, NetApp, Symantec and VMWare.[11]

The company's VC CIO Briefing program educates clients about the latest technologies, gives venture capitalists input into technology roadmaps, and provides customer feedback to technology companies.[2]

The company also has a research group which studies startups for its clients, tracking around 500 at a time, to help the customers identify and take advantage of new IT innovations.[12]
