History

Before starting the new band project in 2013 all three band members were successful as musicians on their own. The bagpipe player and vocalist Sandra Vabarna (then Sandra Sillamaa) even had an academic degree in folk culture/music studies.[1][2] The original idea was to form a group performing Estonian folk music, which is inspired by old traditional folk music and also the music of today.[3] Trad.Attack! uses voices from archive recordings as head vocals and composes it with their own original music, rock, pop and electronical music.[4]

At their first concert they made a stage joke about having a master plan: to be up to perform in every country in the world. Within eight years Trad.Attack! has actually played in 37 countries (only 159 more left). The band has played at many prestigious showcase-festivals including Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), Folk Alliance (US), V-ROX (Russia), Eurosonic (the Netherlands), Sound of the Xity and Strawberry Festival (China), Minas Musica Mundo (Brazil), WOMEX World Music Expo (Spain), Trans Musicales Festival (France), Womad Chile Festival (Chile), Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival (Canada), and the Woodford Folk Festival (Queensland, Australia).

The eleven tracks of their third full-length studio album Make Your Move (2020) tend to extend the boundaries of folk genre with distorted guitars, floor-filling beats and effect pedal manipulated bagpipes.[5] They want to have a stage sound as big as a trio can produce by technical means. Drummer Tõnu Tubli plays also trombone. All songs were tested to work for big festival stage audiences as well as unplugged.[1]
