Tripathi
Tripathi or Tripathy (Devanagari: त्रिपाठी) is an Indian Hindu Brahmin family name found commonly among Shrotriya Brahmins in Indian peninsula including Nepal.
Utkala Brahmins or Brahmins from Odisha use Tripathy instead of Tripathi in romanized form due to common practice.[1]
Meaning of surname
Literally Tripāthi means 'those who recite vedas three times a day', including the vedic branch he was born, which distinguish them from Trivedi.
It's a combination of two words (Tri + Pāthi). In Sanskrit, Tri means three or three times and Pāthi comes from the Sanskrit verb Path which means to read. So, Pāthi means the person who read.
