Tuli (name)

Tuli is an Indian last name of Sikhs in North India. Some are also Hindus, that is because the clan originated from a Khatri sub-caste in India. Khatris are traditionally `Kshatriyas` or Warriors. The Khatri's had started converting to Sikhism, from the time of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. After formation of the Khalsa (1699), and especially during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Hindu Khatri families raised at least one son (usually the oldest) as an Amritdhari Sikh. It is important to note that many of the Khatri clans (gotras) are common with many Jatt castes. Tuli is a highly respected clan in India and members of this community are usually from Punjab in North India. They had a prominent role in the struggle for India's independence against the British Raj.

The writer Neville Tuli, the hockey player Harjeet Singh Tuli, the Canadian entrepreneur Suneet Singh Tuli and the famous actor Rajendra Kumar Tuli are known members of this community. There is also a very large settlement of Tuli's in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Members of this clan have a long lineage at Harvard and MIT and are also founders of Leader Bank.

Tuli clan belongs to Bhagtana Tulianwala, a village located in Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab State, India.
