Vellam: The Essential Drink is a 2021 Indian Malayalam-language biographical drama film written and directed by Prajesh Sen.[1] It stars Jayasurya, Samyuktha Menon and Sreelakshmi.[2] The film was released on 22 January 2021.[3] [4][5]

Plot
The Movie is a biographical movie based on Murali Kunnumpurath, an industrial business man in Kerala, outcast as a Drunkard, reform his life.
Murali Kunnumpurath (Jayasurya) is an alcoholic, who becomes a burden for his family, and the society around him. He used to lie to his wife and his friends to take money for emergency reasons and would often buy alcohol, ended up sleeping outside due to overdrinking. At some places he would even steal jewellery to sell and buy alcohol. He is often seen as a bad person for the society, by his family and neighborhood, though some often talked about his cool demeanor and hardworking nature. One day he meets his friend who is an industrial worker in a factory. He tells him about his addiction and so his friend tries to take him to a de-addiction center where Dr.Subhramaniyam (Siddique) is the main doctor. He takes him under his wing, gives him several tasks, but Murali slacks off and eventually gets drunk. Getting caught, Murali confesses on what happened to his dreadful life, the doctor tries to contact Murali's wife since Murali wants is love and care, as part of the treatment. After the treatment he returns back to his homeplace where his friends treat him the same as before, a drunkard. Murali gets back to his home and sees that his family sold their house and moved. He then decides to jump into a well, which is the scene being a sequel to the movie intro. He is rescued by the locals and when Dr.Subhramaniyam comes to know this he convinces Muralis' family that he requires family support. Murali then slowly becomes a successful Industrialist and is the owner of Waterman tiles which is currently a large tile supplier in both India and Africa. The movie ends with Murali bringing another drunkard to Dr.Subhramaniyam and tells him that the man he brought is what he was in the past, believing that he too can reform, just like he reformed.

Reception
Critical response
The film received positive responses from critics.[14][15] Manorama News's reviewer rated the movie 4/5 and said; "Jayasurya's stellar performance is Vellam's highlight and it portrays a lofty message.[16] The Times of India gave the film a 4/5.[17]
