Education

Prof. Dr. Walter Wahli was born on 23 May 1946 in Moutier, Switzerland. He studied Biological Sciences at the University of Bern in Switzerland; he earned his Ph.D. from the same university.[4]

Research and career

Prof. Dr. Walter Wahli's research mainly focuses on the Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs)[5] and he also did research on other nuclear receptors as positive and negative regulators of gene expression.[6] He investigated the role of PPARs in the most common liver disease known as Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).[7] He underscored the potential of PPARs as drug targets for NAFLD that is often associated to Type 2 diabetes. Walter also did research on the PPARs as receptors exerting a nuclear control of energy metabolism.[8]

He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Lausanne (UNIL).[9] He is the Founder of the Center for Integrative Genomics (CIG) and currently serving at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a joint Medical School by Nanyang Technological University Singapore and Imperial College London as a Visiting Professor of Metabolic Disease.[10][11]

Prof. Dr. Walter Wahli obtained patents for his inventions. His patents include the Composition for regulating lipid metabolism (US8518459B2)[12] and the Composition for enhancing immunity (WO2014170505A3).[13]

Honors

Prof. Dr. Walter Wahli is one of the Advisory Board members of Imagene Labs, Singapore.[14] He served as a Scientific advisory board member of an International Cancer Prevention Institute.[15] He was a member of the Swiss National Science Foundation research council and presided over the Biology and Medicine Division.[16] His Editorial Memberships include, among others, the Open Nutrition Journal,[17] Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology[18] and Editorial board member of Cell & Bioscience.[19]

Dr. Walter Wahli won the Otto-Naegeli-Preis Award for his medical research in the field of Cell Biology/Energy homeostasis. Additional awards include the European Federation of Lipid research Award[20] and Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Lausanne.[21] He was appointed as a Pierre De Fermat Chair of Excellence at Midi-Pyrenees research Centre, Toulouse.[22] He is a Guest Editor of International Journal of Molecular sciences.[23]
