Wampanoag Country Club

Founded in 1924, the Wampanoag Country Club was advertised as an alternative club to the already existing country clubs in and around West Hartford, Connecticut. The clubhouse has been remodeled many times since then being re-built in 1975, and then renovated several times since. Wampanoag has hosted more than 20 major championships and is still a preferred site for championship tournaments. The Club has traditionally been a golfer's club with a high percentage of low handicap players and a very active golfing membership.

History

In 1924, the premier 18 holes of golf was designed by Donald Ross.[1] Donald Ross has also designed the very famous golf course for the Oakley Country Club in Massachusetts.

In 1957, Wampanoag hosted the New England Women's Golf Association (NEWGA) Championship, to be known as the New England Women’s Amateur Championship, which was won by Joanne Goodwin.[2]

In 1994, Wampanoag hosted the 29th Annual Connecticut Women's State Amateur Championship, which was won by Lida Kinnicutt.[3]

In 2005, Wampanoag hosted the 2005 Women’s State Open Champion and Wampanoag's own Liz Janangelo successfully defended her title.

On May 5, 2014, Wampanoag hosted the University of Hartford Men's and Women's Soccer Golf Tournament to benefit the men's and women's soccer teams.[4]

On May 27–28, 2014, Wampanoag hosted the 16th Connecticut Women's Open.[4]

On September 21, 2020, Wampanoag hosted the 32nd Annual Golf Tournament for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford to benefit them.[5]
