History

Waterloo Lines has its origins in the Battle School established near Barnard Castle in County Durham in 1941: it moved to Warminster in 1945[1] and was known as the School of Infantry until it was renamed the Land Warfare Centre in 1988.[2]

The site, on the northern outskirts of the town, lies under the edge of Salisbury Plain and has access to the military training areas on the Plain. It is home to the Specialist Weapons School;[3] the headquarters of the Small Arms School Corps, which trains infantry weapon trainers;[4] and Headquarters Infantry, which was formed in 1996 and is responsible for the recruiting, manning and training policies of the infantry.[5]

The site also has the headquarters of Defence Training Estate, which manages the land occupied by all training areas belonging to the Ministry of Defence.[6]

Since 2002, a nearby building has housed the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer, a large battlefield simulator.[7]

In 2009, the extent of the Warminster Training Centre site was 95 hectares (230 acres).[8]

A unit of the Brigade of Gurkhas, Gurkha Company (Tavoleto), is based at Waterloo Lines to provide realistic OPFOR training.[9]
