Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1 discography
Like other Bach cantatas, Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1, fell into obscurity after the composer's death, but was revived about a hundred years later. From 1971, recordings have tried to return to sounds as Bach would have heard them, played on period instruments in historically informed performances, for example the recording conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.[1][2] The cantata has been recorded as part of several extended sets of Bach's church cantatas. The first of these sets to tackle BWV 1 was that of Helmuth Rilling,[3] followed by the versions of:
- Harnoncourt for the Teldec series[1][3][4]
- Ton Koopman for his series with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir[3]
- Pieter Jan Leusink[5]
- John Eliot Gardiner[3]
- Masaaki Suzuki with the Bach Collegium Japan[6]
It is included in the ongoing project by the J. S. Bach-Stiftung.
