William Stewart (English cricketer)

William Anthony Stewart (19 May 1847 – 31 July 1883) was an English cleric and cricketer. He played as a right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper.[1]

Life

The son of Edward Stewart of Sparsholt, Hampshire, he matriculated at Oriel College, Oxford, in 1866, graduating B.A. in 1870.[2] He made his first-class debut for Oxford University in 1869 against the Marylebone Cricket Club, and played for Oxford University five times in the 1869 season, including the University Match against Cambridge University. In the same season, Stewart made his debut for Hampshire against the Marylebone Cricket Club, his only game for Hampshire in the 1869 season.

In 1870, Stewart played two matches for Oxford University, including his second University Match. He then disappeared from first-class cricket until returning in 1878 for a second and final match for Hampshire against MCC. In his nine matches as a wicketkeeper, he made 9 stumpings and took 15 catches.

Ordained in the Church of England, Stewart was perpetual curate of Muckross, County Kerry, 1873–80 and vicar of West Tisted, Hampshire, from 1880 until his death at Twyford, Hampshire, at the age of 36.[2]

Family

Stewart's brother Herbert Stewart represented Hampshire and the Marylebone Cricket Club in first-class cricket. Stewart's brother-in-law Charles Everett also represented Hampshire in a single first-class match before the formation of the county cricket club.
