Outen originally played with Williamstown in the VFA from 1899-1901 and returned there after his time with the Saints in 1907 to vice-captain and star in the centre in 'Town's 18-point premiership victory that year over West Melbourne, the first flag in Williamstown's history. He captained the team in 1908 & 1909 and finished up with 99 games and 19 goals up until the end of 1909. His brother Mat also played in the 1907 premiership team and another brother, Jack, played with Outen in 1909. He was the uncle of Alby Outen jnr, who played 2 games with Footscray in 1954 before transferring to Williamstown and playing in their 1955 & 1956 premiership teams. Outen's son, Reg, was an emergency in Williamstown's 1939 premiership team after earlier playing with Melbourne and Collingwood Seconds.
