The history of Yermal village is unique and interesting. It has been told that Yermal was covered by Sea and Rivers from 3 sides. Almost 75% of the present geographical area was under water before 1400 years.

Vidyudhumna Pandya, the successor of Bhootala Pandya of Barkoor province invaded up till Yermal setting up the province and installed a dynasty by name " Maramma Heggade " about 1300 years ago.

According to the available history His Highness Janappa Arasu Maramma Heggade (18th century) ruled the village between Kapu and Padubidri (north-south) and up to Yellur towards east. He was succeeded by his son - H.H Laxmappa Arasu Maramma Heggade, who was crowned at the young age of 9 years, he was guided by Gumanna Indra in Administration of the village till he attained majority.

Later his second son H.H Kumarayya Arasu Maramma Heggade ruled the village till 1925, followed by his brother H.H. Nabiraja Arasu Maramma Heggade till 1955.

Later on H.H Shantiraja Arasu Maramma Heggade (Son of H.H Kumarayya Arasu Maramma Heggade & father of present Ashok Raja) ascended the throne as the King in the year 1955.

It was in between the era of Janappa Arasu Maramma Heggade and his predecessor about 500 acres of land was elevated and was made suitable for agriculture. Shaikh Yusuf Khan,a Muslim saint was the architect of modern Yermal. There was one river flowing from east part of Innanje which flows through Yermal and merges the Arabian Sea in the west side. The large area of land was always affected badly by floods. As to develop the area Yusuf Khan, a Muslim saint drafted the master plan and diverted the river from Innanje by blocking the water flow to west region. By this diversion the large area of the land was then used for Agriculture, it was told that earlier the name of Yermal was called as"Mahishapura" but then renamed as Yermal, which means "elevated land " in Tulu.

Yermal also has one of the oldest school which was founded about 105 years ago by H.H Kumarayya Arasu Maramma Heggade, who was also the district board member (dakshina Kannada district) Now The village has 4 primary and high schools and Pre-University College.

The Jain Basadi (temple) has beautiful idol of 8th Thirthankara, Bhagavan Sri Chandranataha swamy of Hoysala architect style. It is said that this Jain temple deity installation was done by a Gujarati pearl merchant about one thousand years ago. When he was sailing from Gujarat to Mangalore port, his boat was struck by some rock. On checking they found a Jain theerthankara idol with moon sign on the bottom. They installed it in the present Jain temple. There after he stayed there and continued worshiping. It is also believed that present temple family are his successors.

The temple is believed to be more than thousand years old with Sri Adhi Janardhana Swamy as the Main deity of worship until the Present Idol of Sri Janardhan swamy was installed about 800 years ago by divine saint Sri Madhwaacharya who established Astha mutts of udupi. Sri Janardhan swami was is also called "Gopi Chandana Murthy". This temple is administered by "Maramma Heggade dynasty". The Annual Carfestival of the Temple is grandly celebrated in the month of December.

There are two mosques in the village. One of the mosque is believed to be more than 2 centuries old and the Festivals like Urus and the holy month of Ramadan is celebrated grandly along with other prominent festivals of the religion. The Darga of saint Yusuf Khan (Modern Architect of Yermal) is also next to the oldest Mosque dating back to few centuries.
