Background

Imadaev began training in combat sports when he was 14 years old - first kickboxing for one year before pursuing boxing. With boxing, he held an amateur record of 59-1. Also a lifelong street fighter, four years ago his brother told him to start MMA. From that moment, he transitioned to MMA and promised his brother that he would become champion.[1]

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Before entering the UFC, Zelim fought in Russian MMA promotions, most notably Fight Nights Global, where he compiled an undefeated 8–0, all won by technical knockout or knockout.[2]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Imadaev faced Max Griffin in his UFC debut on April 13, 2019 at UFC 236.[3] He lost the fight via majority decision. Imadaev was deducted a point in the first round for grabbing the fence.[4]

Zelim faced Danny Roberts on 9 November at UFC on ESPN+ 21.[5] He lost the fight via knockout in round two.[6]

Imadaev faced Michel Pereira on September 5, 2020 at UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Sakai.[7] During the weigh-in ceremony, surrounded by bodyguards from the UFC, Imadaev slapped the brazilian and right after they both were contained by the event's bodyguards.[8] He was dominated through out the fight and repeatedly slapped back, until he was taken down in the third round and lost the fight via a rear-naked choke.[9]

Following his controversial statement praising a Chechen teen responsible for the decapitation of French schoolteacher Samuel Paty, he was released from the UFC.[10]

Controversies

Imadaev sparked backlash in October 2020 for praising a Chechen teen responsible for the decapitation of French schoolteacher Samuel Paty, describing the teen as a "hero of Islam" on social media.[11][12] Imadaev's profile on the official UFC website was made unavailable following the incident.[13]
