The founder is Yoshitaka Inagawa,[1] who is publicly referred to as "sentō-sha" (戦闘者, eng. battler or combatant), and "master instructor" (マスターインストラクター masutāinsutorakutā) to his martial arts peers. The name "sentō-sha" is different from "martial arts" and/or "fighter" in that it means a person who is particular about military "battle", referring closer to something akin to "military artsman" (兵法者, Heihōsha).

Overview

Combat techniques based on ancient Japanese martial arts and its spirit. It is a martial art that assumes various situations in battle such as close quarters combat, and it is a technique that makes full use of the physical manipulation that you use regardless of the spatial distance. "Zero distance" also refers the idea of fighting without considering one's "own sacrifice" - i.e "not making the choice towards self sacrifice".

The founder also has a background in koryu (taijutsu and kenjutsu), Muay Thai and Combat Sambo with some movements and techniques based on Systema and Escrima. In addition to use of bare hands, knives, batons, flashlights and hand guns, the use of rifles is part of its curriculum.[2][3]

Spread

Inagawa has provided self-defence guidance to the members of the JGSDF Central Readiness Regiment. ZERO RANGE COMBAT instructors have been doing lectures at the Japan's National Police Academy.

ZERO RANGE COMBAT has close working relationship with JAPAN Bodyguard Association

In addition to providing guidance to the bases, garrison, and police agencies of the Self-Defense Forces, Inagawa has said that he provided guidance to the foreign military and law enforcement outfits in the Japanese Culture Channel Sakura program, "The Road of Defense Today's Self-Defense Forces" (防人の道 今日の自衛隊, `Sakimori no michi kyō no Jieitai')

The art is controversal in Japan due to its connections with Japanese Nationalism and associated right-wing populism.

In media

Inagawa appears irregularly on Japanese Culture Channel Sakura programs such as "The Road of Defense Today's Self-Defense Forces". In the program, he shows off his skills with his disciples and talks about his thoughts. Episodes were uploaded on Youtube but have been made unavailable, possibly due to Channel Sakura's inflammatory content.[4]

Zero Range Combat is featured in movies "HiGH & LOW THE RED RAIN" (2016), where leading Amamiya brothers fight using Zero Range Combat and "RE: BORN"(2017), which is themed after Zero Range Combat itself.[5][6]
