Samuel Andrew Gumbley was born on 4 August 1992 in Wolverhampton, England. When he was in Year 7, Gumbley began playing the drums and producing music in FL Studio.[4] He attended Smestow School in Wolverhampton, before moving on to study music production at the City of Wolverhampton College, where he attended the same class as Liam Payne.[5]

Aged 15, Gumbley produced the instrumental "Woo Riddim", which two years later became a popular grime instrumental, being used by British MC D Double E for his 2010 song "Bad 2 Tha Bone".[6] S-X was signed to Atlantic Records during his time working as a record producer.[3]

In early 2017, Gumbley began to use his own vocals over his beats, establishing himself as a singer-songwriter as well as just a producer.[4]

In 2018, Gumbley was the opening act for British singer-songwriter Lily Allen throughout the North American and European leg of her No Shame Tour.[1]

On 25 January 2019, Gumbley released a single titled "Had Me, Lost Me".

On 4 July 2019, Gumbley released "Always Wrong" as the first single from his mixtape True Colours.[7][8] The mixtape's second single, "Too Soon", was released on 12 September 2019. True Colours was independently released soon after on 26 September 2019. "Come Alive" was released as the mixtape's third single on 26 December 2019. These singles garnered attention as a result of Gumbley's association with British YouTuber and rapper KSI and the British YouTube group Sidemen, which KSI is a member of.

Gumbley produced and featured on KSI's single "Down Like That", which was released on 8 November 2019 and also features American rappers Rick Ross and Lil Baby.[9] The song topped the UK's iTunes chart and it peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Gumbley's first song to impact the UK charts and his highest-charting single in the UK to date.[10][11] In February 2020, the song received a Silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for exceeding UK sales of 200,000 units.[12] The song also charted at number 77 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and at number 10 on the Billboard Euro Digital Song Sales.[13][14]

On 15 December 2019, he featured on a song by the Sidemen called The Gift, charting at 77 on the UK Singles chart

On 10 January 2020, Gumbley released a single titled "Neither Would I".[15] The song charted at number 45 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart.

Gumbley wrote the chorus of and produced KSI's 2020 single "Wake Up Call", featuring American rapper and singer Trippie Redd, which debuted at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Gumbley co-executive produced KSI's debut album Dissimulation (2020), which debuted at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

Gumbley starred alongside frequent collaborator KSI as cast members of the second series of Channel 4's Celebrity Gogglebox in June 2020.[16]

In May 2020, Gumbley signed with record label Universal after attracting interest from several major record labels.[1] On 18 September 2020, Gumbley released his first single through the record label, titled "Dangerous".[17] The song charted at number 31 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart. It is the first single from Gumbley's upcoming debut studio album which is set to be released in 2021.

Gumbley is a keen football fan and an avid supporter of local team Wolverhampton Wanderers.[18] Since 2019, he has been a proud ambassador of the club's foundation called the "Wolves Foundation."[19]
