Babanov is half-Turkish and half- Kyrgyz.[5] His mother was from the Turkish Meskhetian; she was forcfully deported from Batumi to Kyrgyzstan during World War II.[5] His wife is Kazakh. These facts were used to smear him during the 2017 election.[4]
