Santa Barbara competed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The team was led by second-year head coach Roy Engle and played home games at La Playa Stadium in Santa Barbara, California. They finished the season with a record of seven wins and three losses (7–3, 3–1 CCAA).

  2. What is now known as the Pomona-Pitzer football team was known as Pomona-Claremont from 1950 to 1961. Pitzer College did not exist until 1963.
  3. California State University, Fresno was known as Fresno State College from 1949 to 1971.
  4. Idaho State University was known as Idaho State College from 1947 to 1963.
  5. The official name of Cal Poly has been California Polytechnic State University since 1947. However, it is more commonly known as either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or just Cal Poly.
  6. Pepperdine University was known as George Pepperdine College from 1937 to 1970.
  7. The game against the Cal Aggies was part of an "All-UC Doubleheader" that was held annually from 1948 to 1963. The other game of the double-header was California vs. UCLA. The games were always held at the home stadium of either Cal or UCLA.
