Àlex Corretja won in the final 3–6, 3–6, 7–5, 6–3, 7–5, against Carlos Moyá in a repeat of that year's French Open final. In doing so, he became the first player to win the season-ending finals without previously winning a Grand Slam title in their career, a feat since achieved a further five times.
