2008 US Open – Women's Singles

Serena Williams defeated Jelena Janković 6–4, 7–5 in the final, to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2008 US Open. By winning her title, Williams regained the WTA no. 1 singles ranking for the first time since 2003. This was also the second US Open and third Grand Slam overall she won without losing a set during the tournament. Three of the top four seeds (with the exception of previous year's runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova) were in contention for the no. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament.

Justine Henin was the defending champion, but retired from the sport on May 14, 2008.

Notably this was the final Grand Slam in which 1998 champion and former World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport competed in the singles championship. She lost to Marion Bartoli in the third round.

Julie Coin, ranked 188th at the time, defeated top seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round, making her the lowest-ranked player ever to defeat a world No. 1. Coin surpassed Zheng Jie's record, who was ranked 133rd when she also defeated Ivanovic just two months earlier at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. This record would remain unbroken until the 2009 China Open.
