On the evening of 12 September 2020, a randomly-chosen man was fatally stabbed in a kebab restaurant in Morges, Vaud canton, Switzerland.[1] The accused, a Turkish-Swiss dual national, was known to the Swiss intelligence service as an Islamist and under surveillance for possible links to terrorism.[2] The victim was a 29-year-old Portuguese man.[3] While in custody of the Swiss police, the accused is alleged to have confessed that he acted in the name of jihadism.[1] Swiss authorities suspect a terrorist motive.[3]

The attacker, only identified by his name Omer, was arrested after the attack. Authorities described him as an Islamic extremist, and investigated his radicalization process. At the end of January 2021, it was revealed that Omer was part of an Islamist terrorist cell. The group was previously planning a terrorist attack, and details of the planned event were retrieved on a Telegram chat. The terrorists also linked sites in which was described how to make a bombing. Contacts with French jihadists and Syrian militants belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were also found. All the cell members were arrested, thwarting their plan. Omer, however, was just described as "a person of interest". Omer was sentenced to 15 years in prison after the knife attack.[4]
