- January 26: For the first time since 2013, the Baseball Writers' Association of America fails to select a player for induction into the Hall of Fame. Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, all in their ninth year on the ballot, receive 71.1, 61.8 and 61.6 percent of the ballot respectively. Scott Rolen, in his fourth year on the ballot, is the only other player named on half of the ballots at 52.9%. [8]

- January 20 – Don Sutton, 75, Pitcher who played for 7 Major League Baseball teams for 23 seasons and color commentator for Atlanta Braves games on TBS.[11]
- January 21 – Hank Aaron, 86, Played 22 seasons for the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves from 1954 until he retired in 1976.[12]
