Sheikha Alia, like other members of the Maktoum family, is involved in horse racing. In 2005, she purchased four horses.[3] Her horse Eilean Ban won the EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes on September 2, 2005, at the Newmarket Racecourse.[4]

She has two daughters Lateefa (born 11 February 1985) and Hafsa (born 29 April 1988). Hafsa, the younger one, was brought to the guardianship of her father’s brother after her father’s death and with whom she shares a father-daughter relationship. After her kidnapping which caused a lot of controversies, she moved to Mauritius. She changed her name to keep her identity anonymous. This branch of the family does not like to be in the spotlight and does not appear in public.
