Character biography

Season 1

Alicia becomes more worried about her brother Nick's chemical dependency. The next day, school closes early due to the high levels of absenteeism and rumors of an epidemic. Nick, Madison, and Travis choose to flee to the desert, and they want Alicia, Liza, and Chris to follow. Alicia finds Matt ill in his disheveled house. Travis arrives and sees a bite on Matt, who convinces Alicia to leave. The group returns to Madison's home to gather supplies. Travis tells Madison to take the kids to the desert without him; he will catch up. Alicia witnesses her zombified neighbor, Mr. Dawson, attacking Mrs. Cruz across the street, but Madison prevents her from intervening. A mob sets fire to the store adjoining the barbershop, forcing the Salazars and Manawas to flee. The group reaches Travis' truck and escapes, but not before Griselda is injured by a collapsing scaffold. Unable to reach a hospital, the group drives to Madison's house, where Nick, Madison, and Alicia temporarily flee when the zombified Mr. Dawson attempts to enter, attracted by the barking dog Nick had let in. Nick leads Madison and Alicia to the Trans' house next door, where they take a shotgun. All three families decide to stay the night and evacuate in the morning. The next morning, as the Clarks and Manawas start driving away, the National Guard arrives and quarantines the block. While Travis says, "It's going to get better," Daniel laments that it's, "too late," as he watches a guardsman mark the neighboring house. Soldiers take Griselda and Nick to a hospital, but Nick's family protests his departure. Liza agrees to go to assist the medical team, despite not wanting to leave her son. Travis retreats to the roof and sees the signal from the Dead Zone. Seconds later, he sees and hears gunfire, followed by darkness. The group drives to the National Guard's headquarters to rescue Liza, Griselda, and Nick. Adams agrees to be their guide when let go by Travis. The group infiltrates the base after Daniel distracts the guards by leading a horde of walkers from the arena. Travis, Madison, Daniel, and Ofelia go inside, while Alicia and Chris stay behind. Meanwhile, the walkers breach the perimeter defenses and swarm the base. Travis' group reach the holding cells and set the detainees free before reuniting with Nick, Liza, and Strand. They try to escape through the medical ward, where they discover Dr. Exner has euthanized all of the patients. Dr. Exner tells them of an escape route before presumably committing suicide. Before they can escape, the group encounters Adams, who shoots Ofelia in the arm. Enraged, Travis brutally beats Adams and leaves him for dead. Strand leads the group to his oceanside mansion.

The city of Los Angeles is bombed. Madison and her group board Victor Strand's yacht and escape the bombing. The group arrives at a small island where they find a family, and there they end up knowing that all the cities on the coast have been bombed, and the borders have been closed. After refueling on the island, the group travels to Mexico, the real destination where Strand is headed. During the trip, the group ends up finding two survivors (Alex and Jake), but Strand does not accept them in his boat and leaves them to drift. Later, the group is attacked by pirates who kidnap Alicia and Travis, Madison decides to save her loved ones even against Strand's wishes. I try Daniel's support, Madison manages to rescue her daughter and fiancé and return to the yacht. The group doesn't take long to arrive in Mexico, and everyone is staying at the farm of Thomas Abigail, Strand's boyfriend. Upon discovering that Celia Flores, the farm's housekeeper, ordered the undead to be kept in a dagger, Daniel ends up setting the farm on fire and the group is separated. Travis and Chris go south; Madison, Strand, Alicia and Ofelia Salazar go north; and Nick is also going north. Madison's group finds a hotel in the city of Rosarito and, there, Ofelia shaken by losing her father, leaves the group and leaves Alicia on the verge of death. Strand, Madison and Alicia manage to kill the dead and together with the survivors of the hotel, build a community there. Travis sees the hotel's lights and manages to enter. There the night arrives and two new survivors arrive at the hotel, Brandon and Luke. Travis recognizes them and asks about Chris, only to find out that he was killed by them. Travis kills them both and is kicked out of the hotel. Alicia and Madison leave with him. They decide to go to the market dominated by drug dealers and there they find clues as to where Nick might be. When they arrive at La Colonia, they see everyone dead, Alicia finds a dying Alejandro, and his last words instruct them to look for Nick at the border and together with his mother and Travis they go in search of Nick.

Season 3

After encountering a military patrol on their way to the border, Alicia and her family were captured and taken to the military installations; where they were separated from Travis. Being taken to a comfortable room; Alicia and her mother met a militia leader named Troy, who treated them kindly and assured them that they would release them once they passed the test. Looking for a way to escape, Alicia lent her basilong to her mother which she had come to hide in her ankle and together they began to devise a plan to escape from the horrible place. Assuring her daughter that she would not kill again, Alicia carried out her mother's plan, catching to Troy by surprise, and despite the young man trying to defend himself, Madison managed to reduce him and held him hostage, until Troy's brother Jake arrived who kindly asked Madison to leave his brother and he decided to take Alicia and her group to their community. While traveling in the helicopter in the middle of the night, Alicia and her group were attacked by an unknown person, which ended up fatally wounding Travis, who jumped into the void despite Alicia's pleas to stop him, and eventually the military helicopter had than to make a forced landing. Setting up a small camp for the night, Alicia and an unconscious Luciana stayed with Jake while Charlene guarded the area. Completely depressed and unable to believe what had happened, Alicia heard how Jake affirmed the impossibility of Travis having survived the fall and mentioned that at least his brother would be happy to see her again, unlike his. Hearing a hiss; Alicia received a weapon, with which in a short time she saved the boy from some infected, and returned it to put an end to the corpse of her old companion. After giving their friend condolences and continuing on their way to the ranch, Alicia and Jake carried an unconscious Luciana in their arms and once they reached the community, Alicia informed her mother of the bad news and watched as Nick pointed at Troy with his weapon with the intention of protecting his unconscious beloved; although luckily, the situation was controlled by the ranch leader, who allowed Luciana to be admitted to the place.

During her stay at the Alicia Ranch, she befriends Gretchen who invites Alicia to join her "Bible study." Later, Gretchen, Alicia, Gabe, Terrance, and two other teens go to the underground hangout where they drink, smoke from a bong, and chat. Listen carefully as Alicia shares her experiences off the ranch. Later that night, Gretchen and the others return home in a good mood, shortly after, she began a romantic relationship with Jake Otto and gained the trust of the ranch, eventually co-leading the Otto ranch. When Madison manages to make peace with the natives, they move to the ranch and Alicia questions her mother's decisions to include the natives to the ranch. The problems on the ranch began to get worse and with no other option, Alicia and Jake sacrificed everything cattle to save water. When her boyfriend proposed to flee with him to the Pacific Northwest to start a new life, the young woman refused this idea and stressed that she still had to wait for her mother. Due to her refusal, Jake confronted the young Clark, assuring her that she only manipulated him in the same way that her brother and mother did to their relatives. Before Alicia could defend herself; Nick arrived to inform them that a gigantic horde of infected —attracted by Troy— was heading to the ranch and with no time to lose, Jake and Nick left the ranch to find Troy and left the leadership of the place in the hands of the young woman. Determined to prevent the place from being destroyed, Alicia informed the rest of the ranchers of the problem and with the help of Ofelia and Lee, the inhabitants created some motorhome barriers in an attempt to prevent the dead from crossing the ranch. This attempt was useless and when the horde broke through the barrier, the girl led the locals to a bunker; and on the way, she killed one of her companions in mercy. When the horde of infected invades the ranch, Alicia locks herself with Lee, Ofelia and several residents in the pantry where it is revealed that several residents were bitten and had to be euthanized the other residents died of lack of air, Alicia along with Lee and Ofelia are the only ones who survive in the pantry, during the escape, Alicia is unconscious and is rescued by Madison. Alicia woke up to discover that Jake had died and the group had decided to leave for a nearby dam due to the destruction of the ranch. Tired of being afraid and after all that she had lived through, Alicia decided to go on her own to the destination that Jake had previously shown her; assuring that she would be better on her own.

After discovering Nick and Troy following her and making it clear that she would know how to take care of herself, Alicia ventured through a small town where she found a fast food restaurant and grabbed a bucket full of potatoes. Unfortunately, Alicia had to take refuge in a baseball player and could not prevent a stranger from taking her bucket after she had finished off the infected who forced her to hide. Having found her assault rifle and located the woman, Alicia made an agreement with her to share the bucket and avoid a conflict. Spending the night together, the two talked about their preference for surviving alone. However, in the morning Alicia woke up just in time to find Diana trying to start her vehicle, so the girl convinced her new friend to accompany her.

As they headed to the trade center to exchange the dead parts Diana had collected, a vehicle suddenly collided with her car, causing a dizzy Alicia to fight her partner against the bandits. After driving them away with her assault rifle, Alicia took care of Diana's injured leg while taking her to the infirmary in El Bazar. Receiving the approval of the GP for having kept her stable enough, Alicia agreed to assist him in a surgery he had to perform on a patient. Her surprise was great when she discovered that said patient was the leader of the place, who assured her that if the operation did not go well and she did not walk again, both would be executed. Fortunately, Alicia's reassuring words during the surgery and Eddie's talents managed to get John out of the situation unscathed.

Arriving at Gonzales Dam and discovering that Strand was there, who informed the girl that her mother and brother were alive and assured her that he would get them all out of the dam only if she agreed to help him in the process. While changing John's bandages, the supervisor revealed to her that she knew Strand and made her promise to accompany her on her journeys in exchange for letting her mother live. Her promise was broken after John met her family personally and decided they were a danger to her operation. However, when Nick revealed that he had a detonator that would blow up the dam, Alicia said goodbye to her brother and together with her mother and Strand got on a raft to escape the scene. Unfortunately Nick activated the detonator early and the trio were sucked into the current.

Development and reception

Alica Clark is portrayed by Alycia Debnam-Carey (pictured)

Since Madison's fate was confirmed in the fourth mid-season finale, Alicia is the only surviving main cast member from season 1 introduced in the series premiere.[2]

Alycia Debnam-Carey's performance was praised in the episode "Close Your Eyes". Laura Bradley of Vanity Fair stated the episode was Debnam-Carey's most powerful performance yet, one that proved Alicia still has a lot of story left.[3][4][5][6]

During an October 2020 interview[7] with The Natural Aristocrat, Alycia Debnam-Carey commented about a potential father/daughter flashback scene between Alicia and father Steven Clark. "Yeah! I’ve never even thought about doing a flashback like that! But I’m always for showing some of the more revealing aspects of a character, before this whole apocalypse. And I do think it’s tragic…"
