Background and recording

"All We Have Is Love" is written by Sabrina Carpenter, Afshin Salmani and Josh Cumbree and Carpenter met them in the first day of the recording sessions of the song.[1] In a French Fry Party on the EVOLution Tour in Toronto Sabrina said that they started writing the song on the piano and Carpenter explained that firstly the song was called "All I Have Is Love" and it was a dark, saucy song that talked about "the life that you deserve". In the next day, they rewrote the song and they titled "All We Have Is Love" because they thought it fits better into Carpenter's repertoire and album. Carpenter said in a track commentary that they start creating the song by building a fantasy world where happiness and love take place before everything.[2] In that song commentary, Carpenter states “In the end, the thing that we need to cherish the most is love. And it’s not just love for your significant other…it’s just loving everything you can possibly love with your whole heart.”

In addition of featuring in the background vocals with Sabrina Carpenter, the duo NONFICTION (AFSHeeN and Josh Cumbee) wrote, produced, engineered and mixed the track. Chris Gehringer did the audio mastering at Sterling Sound in New York. The vocals were recorded in 2015 at Kite Music Productions at Los Angeles in California.

Composition

"All We Have Is Love" is a three minutes and two seconds piano-driven pop song with an electropop chorus. The song is composed with a moderate rate of 128 beats per minute. It is written in the key of G major and Carpenter's vocal range spans from the low G3 to D5. Lyrically, "All We Have Is Love" the song talks about happiness, optimism and love that reflects in a new relationship.[3]

Critical reception

Brittany Goldfield Rodrigues of ANDPOP said "The first single dropped in promotion of the album, anyone who pre-ordered the record got ‘All We Have Is Love.” The tune manages to be a sweet love song, while being a fun dance track at the same time. Her soft vocals are perfect on the track, complementing the beats instead of overpowering them. Sabrina’s higher register is everything.".[4] Big City said "Closing the album is “All We Have is Love,” which features a mesmerizing mix of multi-layered harmonies. Written a little over a year ago, the song's finished product is polished pop beats with spoken word sass leaving a perfect cliffhanger for whatever is next for Carpenter and her third release.".[5] That's Why We Musyc said "“All We Have Is Love” is a standout tune she penned, and is ripe with raw emotion set against lush piano. She tells her fictional love, “They could tear this house down brick by brick/But we won’t even miss a thing.” While love is certainly a well-trodden topic, there is something very organic and palpable about “All We Have Is Love” that clearly comes from experience." [6]

Live performances

The song was part of her debut headline tour, being the thirteenth song to be performed.[7] The song was included on The De-Tour, being the ninth song to be performed.
