Anatoliy Zlenko

Anatoly Maksimovich Zlenko (born June 2, 1938) is a Ukrainian diplomat. He was formerly the foreign minister of Ukraine.[1] from 1990 to 1994.

Early life and career

Born June 2, 1938, in the village Stavyshche, Kiev Oblast. In 1959 graduated from Kyiv mining college.

  • 1959 - Mining master of the mine "Maksymivka-Pologa", trust "Kadiyivcoal”, city Kadiyivka (Stakhanov).
  • 1967 - graduated from Kyiv University.
  • 1967-1973 - attache, 2nd Secretary of International Organizations office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.
  • 03/1973 - The staff of the Secretariat of UNESCO in Paris.
  • 1979 - Advisor of International Organizations office for UNESCO in Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR.
  • 10/1983-03/1987 - The Permanent Representative of the USSR to UNESCO.
  • 04/1987 - Deputy of the Minister, from 07/1989 till 07/1990 - First Deputy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
  • 07/1990-25/08/1994 - The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
  • 09/1994-09/1997 - The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations.
  • 19/09/1997-02/10/2000 - The Ambassador of Ukraine in the French Republic.

He strongly promoted Ukraine's relations with Western Europe. In an interview in 1990

Zlenko said:

"A common history existing a thousand years and a deep cultural, linguistic and ideological closeness have linked us with neighboring Poland. The western regions of Ukraine and the eastern provinces of Poland...are similar in make-up of population and economy...Our border with Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania is shorter than that with Poland. But there are also ethnic...influences, economic ties, trade, mixed marriages, the common Danube waters..."

Orders awarded: "For merits» III, II degree., two orders ” For merits” I degree. (2003), Legion of Honor (France, 1998), " For merits" (Portugal, 1998), Diploma of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Author of 100 publications on international subjects.
