History

The Annual Review of Biophysics and Bioengineering was first published in 1972 by the nonprofit publisher Annual Reviews in collaboration with the Biophysical Society.[2] Its inaugural editor was Manuel F. Morales.[3] In 1985, the name of the journal was changed to the Annual Review of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry,[4] followed by another name change in 1992 to the Annual Review of Biophysics and Biomolecular Structure.[5] A final name change in 2008 brought the journal to its current title, the Annual Review of Biophysics.[6]

Scope and indexing

It defines its scope as covering significant developments in the field of biophysics, encompassing subfields like the structure, function, and dynamics of macromolecules, theoretical and computational biophysics, cellular molecular biophysics, physical systems biology, membrane biophysics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and study methodologies.[7] As of 2019, Journal Citation Reports lists the journal's impact factor as 11.685, ranking it third of 71 journals in the category "Biophysics".[1] It is abstracted and indexed in Scopus, Science Citation Index Expanded, BIOSIS, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Academic Search, among others.[8]

Editorial processes

The Annual Review of Biophysics is helmed by the editor or the co-editors. The editor is assisted by the editorial committee, which includes associate editors, regular members, and occasionally guest editors. Guest members participate at the invitation of the editor, and serve terms of one year. All other members of the editorial committee are appointed by the Annual Reviews board of directors and serve five-year terms. The editorial committee determines which topics should be included in each volume and solicits reviews from qualified authors.[9] Unsolicited manuscripts are not accepted. Peer review of accepted manuscripts is undertaken by the editorial committee.[10]
