History

The company was founded in 2001.[7][8] Since the early years, Aquila Capital has focused on sustainable investments. It started with agriculture and forestry,[9] followed by hydropower (including storage),[10] finally raising funds for solar and wind energy.[11] The company positioned itself as a responsible investor for logistics and real estate, too.[12]

In 2016, Aquila Capital received public attention for launching a €500 million vehicle to invest in infrastructure assets and funds.[13] It was open to both institutional and wealthy private investors.[14] In 2018, Aquila Capital financed the expansion of European hydropower by entering a partnership with a Dutch pension investor.[15] Furthermore, Aquila is investment adviser for the Aquila European Renewables Income Fund (AERIF), which raised €154.3 million during its initial public offering (IPO) in May 2020.[16]

Aquila Capital was named European Hedge Fund Firm of the Year in 2010 and 2012.[17][18] Due to continued growth,[19] the company ranks among the largest investment managers in Europe.[20] As of today, the company’s main business units are renewable energy, real estate, energy efficiency, timber and agriculture.

Profile

Aquila Capital is committed to the transition to sustainable energy and a low carbon society, particularly in Europe and Asia.[21] Through the development and financing of sustainable investments and by providing sustainable investment solutions, the company helps to reduce carbon emissions in millions of tons.[22] Its strategy was assessed and confirmed by independent organizations.[23] The company received the Swedish Renewable Energy Award 2018 for its efforts.[24]

Operations

The company is part of Aquila Group, a holding for Aquila Capital and affiliated companies, including Alceda Fund Management from Luxemburg.[25] Both Aquila Capital and Alceda Fund Management are regulated by government authorities in Germany and other countries.[26]

Aquila Capital is managed by Roman Rosslenbroich (Chief Executive Officer) and Dieter Rentsch (Chief Investment Officer), both co-founders of Aquila Group. In 2019, the infrastructure arm of Daiwa Securities, a Japanese investment bank, acquired a 40 % stake of Aquila Capital.[27] The company management is supported by an advisory board.

Aquila Capital is initiator and shareholder of KlimaInvest Green Concepts, an energy and climate protection agency in Germany, that offsets CO2 emissions.[28][29]
